When in Lucca
Lucca is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets — a beautifully preserved city wrapped in medieval walls. Inside, the historic center is a winding maze of cobblestone streets, Romanesque churches, hidden piazzas, and incredible food and wine.
We recommend starting at Enoteca Vanni, where the wine cellar dates back over 2,000 years — we found it on our first trip to Lucca and spent the evening drinking in the square, and it's been a favorite ever since. Small enough to explore on foot or by bike, Lucca is a fun city to spend a day exploring.
We can't wait for you to experience it.
Landmarks & Views
Piazza dell’Anfiteatro
A great place to start exploring Lucca — Piazza dell'Anfiteatro's distinctive oval shape traces the footprint of a Roman amphitheater that stood here for centuries.
Torre Guinigi
Built by Lucca's most powerful medieval merchant family, Torre Guinigi is the city's most distinctive landmark — a 14th-century tower crowned by a rooftop grove of holm oaks. Climb 230 steps to the top for sweeping views over the rooftops, the ancient walls, and the Tuscan hills beyond.
Walks & Outdoor Spaces
Mura di Lucca
Lucca’s Renaissance city walls form a tree-lined promenade encircling the historic center. We recommend walking or biking along the walls - you’ll have great views of the city.
Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca
A peaceful botanical garden just inside the city walls, perfect for a quiet stroll among historic greenhouses and rare plant collections.
Food & Aperitivo
Enoteca Vanni
A personal favorite, and one of the most special spots in Lucca. Enoteca Vanni has been here since 1965, but the cellars beneath the shop date back to 200 AD — 60,000 bottles tucked into ancient stone.
Ciacco Bistro
Ciacco is a casual bistro on Piazza Napoleone — where a great summer market sets up in warmer months. You’ll find sandwiches, tartare, and a great charcuterie. It’s a great spot to sit, drink and people watch.
